Whether you’ve already had an abortion or are still weighing the risks, it’s critical to know the warning signs of infection to best protect your health.
Most times, women are not monitored following an abortion, which means the woman is responsible for reporting concerning symptoms to her healthcare provider.
Continue reading to learn more about signs that may indicate you’re experiencing a post-abortion infection.
Signs of A Post-Abortion Infection
1. Foul-smelling vaginal discharge
As the pregnancy tissue passes through the vagina, bleeding is typical.
However, if the vaginal discharge develops an odor, this could indicate you’re experiencing an infection and should be reported immediately.
2. Fever
Contact your healthcare provider if you develop a fever following a surgical abortion or have a fever that lasts more than 24 to 48 hours following a medical abortion.
3. Heavy bleeding
If you bleed through more than two pads in an hour following a medical abortion or one pad in an hour following a surgical abortion, you should contact your healthcare provider.
4. Severe cramping
Cramping is expected following an abortion, but severe abdominal or back pain can be a sign of an infection and should be reported.
Incomplete Abortion and Infection
It is critical to seek medical treatment immediately if you are experiencing signs of an infection.
Infections often develop if a portion of the pregnancy tissue remains within the uterus following the abortion, also known as an incomplete abortion.
Improper treatment of incomplete abortions can lead to life-threatening complications like hemorrhage and even sepsis, a widespread infection throughout the body.
